"A" for Acquired Taste

This movie impressed me. But I was caught off guard with the Dom/Sub nature of the film and nudity at the end. However, I really should have read the back of the movie where Blockbuster warns potential viewers about the content, hee. My bad. Anyway, James Spader has once again romped his way into a film with sex of the off-beat nature in this Dom/Sub-romantic, drama/comedy.

I call it this because of the quality of acting given by yes Mr.Spader, but more by his co-star, Maggie Gyllenhaal. She upstaged his performance all right. There were sub-plots related to the core of the plot, that some would find down right disturbing. The need to cut ones self, or burn, cause pain. Then finding someone else to do it for you, through the work place no less. Strangely enough, I think I can say the movie doesn't focus on sex. Dom/Sub isn't focused on sex and it is the Dom/Sub that is the focal point. That, and following the way which life is best for you no matter what it means to everyone else, and being loved. Good principles. It doesn't put the sex and nutidy in your face the way Crash did. What a crappy film that was. The only thing worse that comes to mind was Showgirls, which is laughable.

No, the nudity here was at the end of the flim, when the two people are complete with each other. That is how artistic nudity is supposed to be done, because it reveals their vulnerability with one another, and the intimacy of their acquired relationship. Plus, it's funny as hell sometimes given their situations. However, you have to be ready to watch things you may not be comfortable watching, or just find gross and unnecessary. Remember, these two people differ from the supposed norm. Over all, Mr.Spader's performance is good but not as good as Miss.Gyllenhaal's. She bared every emotion I could think of and well. So watch this film if you're looking to acquire a taste for the less publically approved side of relationships that fly in the face of political correctness.
